Hong Kong, once the financial capital of Asia, is now struggling with both local economy and the ongoing debate over independence.
PRC President Xi Jinping gave a firm response (more like warning) when addressing at the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return. “Any attempt to endanger China’s sovereignty and security, challenge the power of the central government and the authority of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, or use Hong Kong for infiltration or sabotage activities against the mainland, is an act that crosses the red line and is absolutely impermissible,”
Once the freest market economy of the world, Hong Kong is now facing increasing Chinese interference both politically and economically.
The recent conflicts between student protesters and school representatives exemplifies Hong Kong local students’ demand for freedom of expression and voting right (not Beijing appointed Chief Executive)
