Cord-Cutters - The Nightmare for Cable Providers to Come ?

2015 - 10 - 30

We been expecting cord-cutters for a while and have yet seen any moves.

  1. Cord-Cutting Might Not Be So Bad for Cable Companies

Today, video is only about 40% of cable companies’ profits… For a typical cable operator, a 10% loss in video subscribers trims revenues by 6% but only trims profits by about 4%….

http://blogs.wsj.com/briefly/2015/04/12/5-things-to-know-about-cord-cutters/

YouTube Red: Trigger For Cord Cutting?

Google’s YouTube announced its first-ever subscription service last week, YouTube Red, with the usual set of (uninteresting) “premium” features– ad-free videos and offline/background playback. The only interesting tidbit was that YouTube Red also would house “original” movies and TV shows starring well-known YouTube personalities. While it may seem mundane, this move has the potential to present a true disruption to the TV industry.

In addition to scale, creating a parallel library of premium content also gives YouTube another strategic advantage. Teenagers who have grown up watching YouTube could increasingly gravitate toward long-form content produced by personalities and brands they are familiar with. Long-term, this could decrease interest in traditional movies and TV shows (maybe even sports), leading to real cord cutting.

Thoughts on Third-Party Payment: It's a Fad

We have been through this topic in 2013. Third-party payment hasn’t been an “issue” in Taiwan. There is no problem to solve.
